The SAARC Coastal Zone Management Centre (SCZMC) was established in Male’, the capital city of Maldives on 25th June 2005. Policy matters pertaining to the organization are reviewed by the Governing Board consisting of the representatives from the Member States which also approves the annual budget. This Centre is headed by a Director, who is also the Director General of the Ministry of Environment, Energy and Water of the Maldives. The Director of the SCZMC is assisted by the General Services Staff recruited locally from the Maldives.
Identify the organizations in the region dealing with relevant coastal resources management issues and facilitate interaction amongst institutions (ministries, coastal authorities, intergovernmental organizations, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, funding agencies, etc.) and other stakeholders involved, and promote coordination and cooperation on Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) issues;
Collect, compile and disseminate information through networking among the Member States;
Asses and standardize the planning methodologies for ICZM;
Provide support for the promotion and development of ICZM concepts, methodologies and planning tools;
Promote the exchange of experiences, information, data and expertise in ICZM;
Assist in institutional strengthening and human resources development for capacity building in ICZM; and
Conduct and coordinate research in the field of coastal zone management and facilitate technology transfer.
The expenditure of SCZMC is shared among the Member Countries who provide funds in the form of contribution. The contribution is made in terms of Institutional Cost and Programme Cost separately. The Capital Cost of the Centre is borne by the Government of Maldives. The quantum of such contribution is mutually agreed before the commencement of financial year and the unspent balance, if any alongwith the income generated at the Centre is credited to the Member States in proportion to their contributions for that year.
