Seminar for Integrated Coastal Resources Management

South Asia Region

 

Introduction

 The requirement for integrated coastal resources management to increase livelihood for coastal communities in the south Asian countries has long been recognized.  In this  aspect various initiatives have been taken by the South Asian  countries in the long-term, while satisfying current needs of the coastal communities and national development goals.  These management initiatives have obtained many experiences on coastal resources management including success stories and failures.  However proper institutional mechanism has not established to disseminate these experiences among the countries except international workshops which   have organized with other  aspects.

At present  the Coastal Resources Center established by the SARCC  countries  and the center is operational male in  the Moldives.  Through  this center  the experiences  on coastal  resources management  initiatives  can be desimated and also centre can be used as  local point.

 Objectives

The main objective of the seminar is to give basic knowledge on coastal resources management requirements in South Asian region,  its issues, management initiatives taken by the South Asian countries, functions of the coastal habitats and management strategies adopted by the region.

In addition to the  above main objective, the seminar will give opportunities  to observe various coastal management initiatives taken by the Sri Lankan Authorities  to manage coastal resources.

 Training period and place

 The  training period will be 5 days  starting from 12 – 16 November  2007 at the Negombo  Sri Lank.   The  Negombo is a coastal city very close to the Bandaranayake  International Air Port.

 Themes of the Seminar

The seminar will continue under seven themes.  They are :

Climate change and its impacts to the coastal zone

  1. Coastal  habitats and their management issues.
  2. Coastal erosion
  3. Coastal fisheries and management strategies
  4. Large marine system issues and management strategies
  5. Coastal pollutions and pollution management initiatives
  6. Coastal Resources Management Initiatives – Policies, strategies and management plan

In addition to the above theme presentations, one day field visit will be arranged to see the management  activities taken by the Sri Lankan  government.
